These lines are my paternal lines. I will gradually include documents such as wills, probates, inventories, deeds etc. I appreciate an information anyone can add to these lines. If you have connections to these lines please contact me

Please put in your subject line the family name you are referring to so I do not overlook it by mistake! Thank you!
The first generation known is (most of this information was found in the memoirs of Joseph Franklin Stokes. And some of the data has not been confirmed on this generation) JOHN STOKES, born abt. 1758 in Limerick, Ireland. John married MARY HALE, born abt. 1776. Mary's father was to have been SQUIRE ISAAC HALE who was born in Scotland. John was to have been in the military in Ireland. He supposedly hit his commanding officer which was punishable by death. So at the age of 17 his family put him on a ship in a hogshead as a stow away. John's grandmother was to have been Joana O'Brine (O'Brien). John & Mary are said to have had 10 children: 7 sons and 3 daughters. The only known children are:
- John, Jr. Born c 1790 (see below)
- Rev. William H. Born Dec. 26, 1798; Died Mar. 12, 1862 Bethel, Ellis, Tx. William 1st married Elizabeth Carter Mar. 1, 1821; 2nd Mourning Dove Williams, Oct. 1829; 3rd Martha Billingstea Watts, May 19, 1837, Wilkes Co., Ga.; 4th Melissa Jane Morris Evans, Aug. 18, 1842, Hancock Co., Ga,
- Jacob
John was to have served in the American Revolutionary War. Mary filed for administrix in Laurens Co., S.C. Feb. 5, 1816 on John's estate. In the administration, listed with Mary, John, Jr., Jacob & Wm. was Wm. Lummus(?). An appraisal took place Oct. 19, 1816. The sale was Oct. 21, 1816. Mary is found living in Abbeyville, Co., S.C in 1820.
JOHN, JR. was born about 1790 in S.C. He married AMY DUTY. John & Amy were in Laurens Co., S.C. in 1810 & 1820. Between 1820 & 1826 they lived in Ga. From Ga. they moved to Morgan Co., Al. They were to have had 11 children (3 born in S.C. & 8 born in Ga. & Al.). Known children of John & amy are:
- Mary Ann born Nov. 15, 1813 Laurens Co., S.C.; Died Jan. 28, 1872 Umpire, Howard, Ar.; Buried Cedar Hill Cemetery; Married James Young Apr. 17, 1834 in Morgan Co., Al.

Married Oct. 5, 1848 Sulphur Springs, Polk, Ar. Ellendor Priscilla Ralls. Joseph served in the Ar. 19th Reg. Co E Topp MS Brigade CSA. He was a well known bear hunter in the Howard and Sevier Cos. area.
- James H. (see below)
Amy filed for administrix of John's estate Aug 23, 1830 in Morgan Co., Al. The appraisal was Sept. 30, 1830 and the sale was Oct. 25, 1830. Signing with Amy in the administration was Abraham Skidmore and Michael Skidmore. Amy (in the court record she is listed as Noaks) remarried in Morgan Co. to Stephen Bailey July 9, 1834. By 1840, Stephen had "sold the home place for a yoke of oxen and a wagon" & moved the family to Chickasaw Co., Ms. They remained there only a few years before moving to Crittenden Co., Ar. In 1846 they had traveled on to Sevier Co., Ar. with 40 head of cattle, 30 head of hogs. And at one time one pet bear, one pet deer, one cat and one sow and pigs. They landed about 4 miles of Dierks at a spring of water, stretched out their tent and put up a house. Stephen apparently died between 1850 & 1860. and Amy may have died between 1860 & 1870. Nothing further was found on either of them.
JAMES H. was born July 11, 1833 in Morgan Co., Al. (according to Bible records and the census agrees with this date). But if you recall his "father's" estate was probated in 1830. So I am an illegitimate Stokes, but I have not found any bastardy case to prove who might be the father. Mann & Paulina sold their land in Howard Co. to his father, James and in 1910 packed their things and headed for Ok. They came by horse and covered wagon. It took them 2 weeks to reach their destination of Konawa, Ok. Little did they know what terrible fates were ahead. Their daughter Della died of diarrhea in 1918. Marie was born dead just a few years later. Paulina died Jan 29, 1923 and is buried at the Konawa Cemetery. On May 18, 1923, Daniel had a dance at his home just outside of Konawa. The Stokes men were known for their "home brew". The sheriff's department had been told there would be home brew at the dance, so they were going on a "whiskey raid". Delton and John Lee (who would marry Delton's sister), went to the spring to get a bucket of water. As Delton knelt down the Sheriff hollered halt. This startled Delton and he began to run. The shooting started and when it was over John was grazed on his side and Delton lay dead. At the inquisition held at Daniel's home the next day, it was said that the gun shot was made by an unknown party without criminal intent. Only 4 months later Mann home was petitioned to be put up for sale for lack of payment. Mann began breaking up housekeeping and several of the young children went to live with their Uncle Henry Tollett in Texas. Lela being one month away from 15 married John Lee and they provided a home for Carl, Alvie, & Lucille, so that the children would not be split up. This did not end Mann's troubles. Aug 13, 1932, he was staying and working for Rachel Tanner. A dispute occurred between him and 10 year old Helen Chandler. After Mann spanked her, Helen slapped back at Mann. At this Mann slapped her & Ted Bevels interrupted by saying "Spank her but don't hit her". An argument started between Mann & Ted. When it was over, Mann had shot Ted, leaving 50-75 bird shots in Ted's right chest and several punctured Ted's lung. Mann was charged with Assault with Intent to Kill. He was sentenced to one day in McAlester Prison. He was delivered to the warden Nov 26, 1932 and released Feb 11, 1933 (I am sure part of this extra time was to pay off his legal fees). Aug 10, 1936, record temperatures were being broken. Seminole 117 degrees; Ada 115 degrees; since July 13, 1996 95 people had died from the heat. On this day Mann was sitting at a watermelon arbor between Ada and Konawa, when Ted drove slowly by and shot Mann in the right chest with a shot gun. Mann ran into a stubble field and lay for sometime before he was found. When the ambulance drivers arrived he was in shock. Mann died at the Ada hospital at 8:30 that night and is buried at the Konawa Cemetery. Ted Bevels received 4 years at the McAlester prison for Manslaughter in the 1st degree.
JAMES DANIEL "DAN" was born Aug 16, 1895 in Dierks, Howard, Ar. He married Nov 14, 1914 in Konawa, Ok. ELVY MAE POTTER, born Jan 1, 1899 in Ava, Douglas, Mo. Their children:

Before the highway went thru, Dan & Elvy lived SE of Konawa on Negro Creek in a floored tent. As a child I do not remember them living together. Elvy remained on the home place and Dan lived in town. They never divorced but did not live together. Dan died Aug 28, 1957 and Elvy died July 4, 1960. Both are buried at the Konawa Cemetery.

Richard's will was written Jan 4, 1822 in Knox Co., In. Sarah "Sally" remarried Mar 21, 1825 in Knox Co., In. to "Elder" John Parker (whose 1st wife Sarah "Sally" White had died July 28, 1824 in Crawford Co., Il.) John being from Il. Sarah "Sally" moved with him and in 1831 they were living in Coles. Co., Il. In 1832, Elder John, being a "two seed" or "Hardshell Baptist" decided to take his preaching to Tx. In Aug. 1833 they left Crawford Co. with 25 ox-drawn wagons. Most travelers it only took a few months to travel to their destination but they did not travel on Sundays so they passed thru Ar. & Mo. in the fall of 1833. In Oct. 1833 they landed in Claiborne Parish, La. They rested before crossing the Sabine River. They stayed at Grimes Prairie for almost a year and a half. Here the built Fort Brown. Some family members stayed behind, while the others crossed the Trinity River and traveled 45 miles to the headwaters of Navasota River where they began to build Ft. Parker. The winter of 1834 was extremely cold. By spring they had built cabins and cleared fields. With the uprising of the Indian wars and the Fall of the Alamo on March 6, 1836 and Santa Ana still on the rampage, the families of Ft. Parker decided to head for Ft. Houston in Anderson Co. With the heavy spring rains they were detained at the Trinity River. While there they heard that Santa Ana had been captured at San Jacino on April 21 and Tx. was a free Republic. So the families returned to Ft. Parker. Living inside the fort was Elder John & Granny Sarah "Sally" Pinson Duty Parker, John's sons: James W., his wife Martha Duty and their 6 children (2 of their children Rachel Parker Plummer and Sarah Parker Nixon were married and had children of their own. Rachel married Luther T.M. Plummer. Sarah married L.D. Nixon.); Elder John's son, Silas Mercer and his wife, Lucinda "Lucy" Duty and their 4 children, Mrs. Nixon mother-in-law to Sarah, Elizabeth Duty Kellogg, Samuel Frost and his wife and children, G.E. Dwight and his family. May 19th was like prior mornings. About 9 a.m. James W. Parker, L.D. Nixon & Luther Plummer left the fort to go tend to the fields about a mile away. Not more than an hour had passed when someone inside the fort hollered "Indians!" The 26 people inside the fort stood frozen as the reported "not far from 800" Kiowa Caddo, and Comanche waited outside the fort with a white flag. Although Silas protested his brother Benjamin opened the gate to talk. At first sight, Sarah Nixon made an escape to get her father and husband's help. But before help could get there the Indians attacked the fort. Benjamin Parker lay on the ground with spears piercing his body. Robert Frost lost his balance and the Indians moved their horses back and forth until there was little left to recognize. Susan Parker had been roped and drug thru the fire and live coals. Silas had been hung suspended on the heavy fort gate. Elder John had his scalp taken and his clothing stripped and his genitals ripped off before he was killed. Granny Sarah "Sally" Pinson Duty Parker was pinned to the ground with a lance, stripped of her clothing and was violated and left to die. The evening of the attack, rescuers went in search of survivors. Upon passing a cabin they thought they saw a ghost. Getting closer they found it was Granny Parker. She had drug herself 3/4 of a mile to the cabin. She told them of some silver $106.50 she had hidden under a hickory bush which they found by moonlight. No other survivors were found at the fort. The rescuers took Granny Parker to Ft. Houston which was about 150 miles. Granny did not live long after getting to Ft. Houston. Captured during this raid was: Elizabeth Duty Kellogg, she was ransomed to some Delawares for $150, who after a few months was reimbursed by Gen. Sam Houston and she was taken home Aug 20, 1836; Rachel Parker Plummer (daughter of James W. & Martha "Patsy" Duty Parker) along with her young son, James Pratt Plummer, she was with the Comanches for 21 months. During this time Rachel gave birth to the son she was pregnant with at the time of the raid. The Indians finally killed the baby after repeatedly dragging it thru prickly pears and after being torn to pieces was then thrown in her lap. James Pratt would only be brought near enough for Rachel hear him cry. Rachel was returned home Feb 18, 1838. About one year later after her return Rachel died. Her son James Pratt Plummer was returned Jan 1843. Children of Silas Mercer and Lucinda "Lucy" Duty Parker were also captured. Their son John was returned Jan 1843. He eventually married a Mexican woman and lived in Mexico. Silas & Lucy's daughter, Cynthia Ann married Comanche Chief Peta Nocona. They had 3 children Pecos, Topsanna, & Quanah. Cynthia Ann & Topsanna was taken by military force Dec. 18, 1860 and taken back to her white family. Topsannah died Dec 15, 1863. Grieving over the loss of her daughter and not being allowed to return to her husband and sons, Cynthia Ann died in 1870. Her son Quanah became a Comanche Chief.
Quanah was never captured but surrendered when he saw his people were going to starve during the hard cold winter. He accepted the white man's way of life and became very successful and respected person. Upon learning his mothers name he became known as Quanah Parker.
